Scholarships
Saturday, July 23, 2005
Had official scholarship day yesterday. Was bearing a half-cynical, half-curious demeanour as I toured the exhibition grounds, checking out the various stalls just to see how much a particular scholarship is vyed for and how thristy for talents the various organisations are. Figured out on a final note that SPH would be the only one I would most probably apply for, and it would be a bonus to get scholarship. Didn't even bother to attend the talk because it was just so stereotypical and punctilious, as usual.
Went to meet up with Zi Qian with ZQ, Alvin and Jiu Rong in the evening. Turns out that the REAL scholarship talk was held then, as Zi Qian casually and well, matter-of-factly talked about things like bonds, future plans and such, spoken like a true experienced senior. Obviously he sort of strayed away with many attempts at self-appraisal (Zi Qian being Zi Qian) but what he said really left a strong mark. Especially when I hear how people either slog hard for scholarships to pursue their further studies or work for wages to fund themselves. Felt so useless that I have been feeding off my parents for all these years. Really would like to teach tuition to cover my own expenses in the very least but I think that will be quite hard, considering I have so little time before enlistement after As. Decided that adopting a global perspective will be more relevant than sticking to the myopic aim of getting a scholarship. After all, signing that agreement would mean trading off 10 years. (2 years in NS, 5 years of studies and at least 4-5 years of bond fulfillment) Alright let fate decide I guess. For now, I surrender onto sleep!!
