Friday, April 25, 2008

Lions for Lambs

Thursday, April 24, 2008

It was a long overdue title I wanted to watch since last year. The trailer was intriguing and kept me deeply rooted in my seat in the cinemas, and I knew the reason was not because I was part of Organisation A and hence makes it justifiable to be able to empathise with the theme being brought out in the movie. The repetitive questions appear once again: whether there is the need to fight violence with violence? Is the choice to play on the offensive side as a rule of engagement between countries necessarily beneficial? Certain issues were openly discussed too, such as the decision to continue adopting a policy of apathy or getting involved in politics in the hope of changing it from within, and the age-old debate over the morality issue of sacrificing lives for the sake of a greater cause: a nation's pride and the security of her people.

Synopsis

Three stories told simultaneous in ninety minutes of real time: a Republican Senator who's a presidential hopeful gives an hour-long interview to a skeptical television reporter, detailing a new strategy for victory in Afghanistan; two special forces soldiers ambushed on an Afghani ridge await rescue as Taliban forces close in; a poli-sci professor at a California college invites a promising student to re-engage. Decisions press upon the reporter, the student, and the soldiers. The two soldiers were originally students of the professor who willingly made the decision to enlist and participate in the battle in Afghan and as they fight for survival in the field, they become the line that binds the other two stories together.

Great acting, a neatly carved out plot and much food for thought.

Quotes from Lions for Lambs:

"So you think it's better to try and fail than to fail and try?"
"Yes."
"But what is the difference if you end up in the same place."
"At least you did something."

If you don't stand for something, you might fall for everything.

On Sharing

Monday, April 21, 2008

We live in a world promoting freedom of expression and emphasising while encouraging the display of personality. The fact that the majority of us who own computers spend at least 60% of our daily lives talking to them and making sure our 'relationships' do not go haywire tells alot about our reliance on these supposed tools we initially invented to lighten our load and alleviate our problems. I am not going to talk about how we are slowly subjecting ourselves to enslavery and servitude under the increasing pressure of computers. Let's go to one thing the internet and the computer has brought us: file sharing. We just need a few big incidents like the accidental leakage of a private bedroom photo collection, or the tremendous success of yo*tube to tell us how much we still yearn to connect with the rest of the world even if you get holed up in front of the computer at home.

Sharing, ironically, is so generously carried out in cyberspace that one might feel it is a selfless act of care. We make the effort to upload videos we source from other sites, or contribute music videos or movies from our own CD stash, even to the extent of going the extra mile to make sure the quality of the files we have uploaded do not differ too much from the original. Such a helpful spirit, if channelled to reality and work, would probably be revolutionary in terms of the number of workplace miracles that will result from all this amount of positive energy. But until then, we will just continue to enjoy basking in the free, pleasurable sharing environment created in the very heart of cyberspace.

In reality, we all share a common hobby though: we are collecting problems everyday, and this is a collection that will never end.

On a side note, I received this comment that made me feel, helpless...

"Oh Mr Tan are you from China?"

"No I am Singaporean."

"Why is your chinese so good?"

*pauses*

"I can speak english too."

"Omg more english coming from you!"

"..."

I couldn't really decide whether I was feeling more nonchalant or irritated by such stereotypical, unjustified, irksome fallacies.. But once again it probably proves that billingualism isn't that much of a strength we can boast of ,when we disprove it among ourselves.

Sunday, April 20, 2008

Wednesday, April 09, 2008

On Image

Sunday, April 06, 2008

Image is something people look to for a first impression, perhaps even a lasting one. It is hardly surprising that people conceive and portray different images at different times then, to fit the bill, or to keep in line.

But it becomes a pain when the image is something involuntarily thrusted to one using a rather diplomatic form of entrustment. Upholding the image becomes a responsibility, to the extent you feel you have just been handed yet another mask to put on. (If life has not already burdened you with enough.. but of course, it is a personal choice to wear them..)

And certain masks, when worn, can either make you feel like a clown or give you this false sense of nobility. The difficult thing sets in when you are required to perform the role befitting that of your new image, and the many ensuing demands that have until now stay hidden start to kick in before you start realising what you have landed yourself in. And you start questioning if it is actually worthwhile shouldering all this burden and responsibility on top of the work you rightfully have to complete.

So is image an asset of a liability? We should all probably start to weigh the advantages and disadvantages now, economically, since that is the only way of measuring things in tangible returns..
