Mars and Venus

Read a piece entitled "Evolutionary Psychology" by Helena Cronin, a feminist. It touches quite a bit on evolutionary biological explainations to the differences in sexual behaviour on Man and Woman. There are few interesting points highlighted by Cronin.

"Give a man fifty wives; and he can have children galore; but give a woman fifty husbands- no use at all. For men quantity pays, for women quality pays..."

"For example, when asked to imagine their partner falling in love with or having sex with someone else, predictably the women were more jealous over loss of committment, the men more over sexual infidelity"

"Consider the case of men. Because they are built to play a higher-risk, higher-stakes game, they are far more competitive, risk-taking, opportunisitic, persevering, single-minded, status-seeking, inclined to display, to show off. That is why men are more likely to die heroically, win a Nobel Prize, drive too fast, commit murder... It is why such male excess is universal... in every known reord back through time."

"Cronin cites a study of American college students, which showed that when asked by a stranger for a date, 50 per cent of both men and women agreed, but when asked 'Have sex with me tonight?', 75 per cent of men agreed compared to not one woman."

"Why in, say half the world's societies, don't parents care more about their sons' virginity than their daughters' or women prefer the lowest-status men? Why.. arent there societies with no sex differences at all?"

-Excerpts from "What Philosphers Think" edited by Julian Baggini And Jeremy Stangroom

Well, they don't say Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus for nothing. But I do think there are inherent sexual differences, even from fundamental Darwinian theory, from the difference between sperm- numerous, small, mobile, low-cost- to eggs- sparser, larger, rich with essential provisions and that men can get away with the briefest of encounters; women are committed to nine months of hard labour. (by chance, unless abortion is an alternative)

There's a saying "men double the numbers; women divide them." Anyone don't understand that sentence the numbers basically just refer to sex experiences, or partners. That said, Cronin also added that "it is assumed men are more inclined to be promiscuous, and so they enjoy sex more. But on those grounds, one could equally argue that the choosier you are, the more you are likely to enjoy sex- and so men enjoy sex less than women." She also argued "why would women accept male values about the way that sexuality ought to be?" since "it is a mistaken view that in order to have fairness, you have to have sameness".

Let's just say we are just two different types of homosapiens.
