Aftershock thoughts

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

The series of earthquakes in Japan left a trail of destruction with a staggering death toll amounting to 10000, and after being heavily hit by the tsunami, the country still faces the imminent threat of multiple nuclear reactor meltdowns in the wake of fresh tremors. So many lives changed, so many hopes shattered, so much lost, and so much more on the line.

I saw footage of toppled buildings, flooded towns, helpless individuals.

I saw a community struggling to restore the normalcy in daily life amidst repeated merciless blows from Nature threatening to keep them down with each strike.

I saw the people extending a helping hand still trembling after embracing fear and shock; people running out of shelter to pull a stranger out of harm's way; people sparing a thought for others amidst different goals and priorities.

I saw humanity, weak on its knees in this unexpected hour of fragility; I saw humanity, getting back on its feet, torn but not broken, unrelenting in moments of fortitude.

When the lighthouse flickers out, the boats have to continue to find their way in the dark so that they do not collide into each other or crash onshore.

We find ourselves once again humbled in the face of Nature's immense power, yet encouraged by reignited personal strength that resides deep within. Let there be light, one that we shine.
